This week in first grade...

Updated 10.04.09

The first family night at Cici's is this Wednesday, October 7th! As far as I know, if we have the most students there we can earn a free pizza party in our classroom! See you at Cici's!! :)

Graded Papers Set 2 will go home in the buddy folder on Tuesday. Please take time to review and discuss these papers from this past week with your child before signing and returning the top page. You may keep the actual papers if you wish, or return them with the top page. Email me with any specific questions you may have. Most work will have a "stamp grade," but others will have a number grade on a scale of 1-4. A 3 is on level, and 2 needs some improvement.

This week in first grade we will go on to the first week of Tumble Bumble. Homework for both Language Arts and Math will go home Monday night. Remember: if your child needs extra practice or is done too early with his homework, try one or all of the following: practice neatly writing the alphabet (uppercase/lowercase); practice writing and spelling numbers zero through twenty; complete the activities in the homework folder for the Language Arts Family Times; or visit my links/games page on the Weebly. Email me for more suggestions!

The Kempsville Library is now open! :) They should have a copy on hand of our AR list; kindergarten and first grade level books are perfectly acceptable for all students to read at this time. Continue to read at home to/with your child. It's the best thing you can do!

We will be continuing Unit 2 in Math this week. Your child should be able to count forwards and backwards from 1-20 easily by one's and two's, and the printing of numbers 0-9 should be getting neater each week. Your child should also be able to recognize most spelled numbers from zero-twenty, although some of the teens are a bit harder for them to grasp right now.

In Social Studies we will continue to discuss the symbols of the United States: the Statue of Liberty, the Washington Monument, the bald eagle, and the flag.

In Science we continue to make observations about fall.
